Performance Levels

Emerging or Elite.

Emerging • Restricted

Emerging

The Emerging division is designed for dancers who are still developing their competitive experience. It is open to any dancer who has not previously won 1st Place in a Restricted/Emerging section for that style.

Once a dancer wins 1st Place in a Restricted/Emerging section, they must compete in the Elite division for that style at future competitions.

Elite • Open

Elite

The Elite division is open to all dancers and is intended for those with more competitive experience. Any dancer who has previously won 1st Place in a Restricted/Emerging section must compete in the Elite division for that style.

Dancers may enter Elite at any time. Once they move to Elite after winning Emerging, they cannot return to Emerging for that style.

Style-specific rule: Performance-level eligibility is assessed separately for each dance style.

Genre Definitions

Know your section.

Jazz

A routine demonstrating jazz technique, incorporating strength, flexibility, turns, leaps and performance quality. Choreography may range from traditional, theatrical or commercial jazz styles while remaining fundamentally jazz-based.

Broadway / Musical Theatre

A theatrical routine inspired by stage or screen productions, with emphasis on storytelling, characterisation and performance.

Lyrical

A routine blending ballet and jazz technique to interpret the emotion and story of the music, emphasising expression, control, fluidity and musicality.

Traditional Contemporary

A routine demonstrating contemporary dance technique with emphasis on movement quality, floor work, dynamics, versatility and artistic expression.

Commercial Contemporary

A contemporary routine influenced by the commercial dance industry, combining contemporary technique with performance-driven choreography.

Classical Ballet

A routine demonstrating classical ballet technique, artistry, musicality and technical execution.

Demi Character

A ballet-based theatrical routine incorporating classical technique with characterisation and storytelling.

Tap

A routine demonstrating tap technique, rhythm, timing, clarity of sound and musicality.

Hip Hop

A routine demonstrating authentic hip hop movement, style, groove and musicality.

Acrobatic

A routine incorporating dance and acrobatic elements, demonstrating strength, flexibility, balance, control and technical execution, with dance remaining an integral component of the performance.

Open

An additional solo section in which competitors may perform any recognised dance style. The routine entered must be different from any other routine performed by the competitor during the competition.

Championship Sections

Championship Eligibility.

To qualify for a Championship, competitors must perform at least one qualifying solo in the relevant style during the competition.

Jazz Championship

Qualifying sections: Jazz, Broadway / Musical Theatre or Hip Hop.

Lyrical / Contemporary Championship

Qualifying sections: Lyrical, Traditional Contemporary or Commercial Contemporary.

Ballet Championship

Qualifying sections: Classical Ballet or Demi Character.

Competitors may enter more than one Championship provided they meet the qualifying requirements.
Championship Routine: Competitors may repeat their qualifying routine in the Championship. They may also perform a different routine within the same eligible genre.

Music

All music must be uploaded via Central Dance Network by the published closing date. Competitors are responsible for ensuring the correct music has been uploaded.

Voice critiques will be provided for all performances.

Props

Props are permitted provided they are safe, can be carried by the competitor or their assistant, and do not damage the stage or delay the competition.

Music & Voice Critiques

All music must be uploaded via Central Dance Network by the published closing date. Competitors are responsible for ensuring the correct music has been uploaded.

Props

General Rules
  • Each competitor may perform one routine per section unless otherwise stated.
  • Proof of age may be requested.
  • Competitors must be ready backstage when called.
  • Music, choreography and costumes must be age appropriate.
  • All competitors, teachers, parents and spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship and treat everyone with courtesy and respect.
  • The safety and wellbeing of all competitors is a priority. Any choreography or skill considered unsafe may be stopped at the discretion of the adjudicator or Event Director.
  • Competitors must wear appropriate footwear for the dance style being performed.
  • Improvisation competitors must wear plain dance attire with no studio names, logos or identifying branding.
  • Improvisation music will be selected by the adjudicator.
  • All official photography and videography will be provided exclusively by Elara Dance Challenge’s official media partner. Professional photographs and videos will be available for purchase at the event. Personal photography and video recording of performances is not permitted.
  • The adjudicator’s decision is final.
  • Elara Dance Challenge reserves the right to combine or divide sections depending on entry numbers.
  • Elara Dance Challenge reserves the right to amend the schedule or these rules where necessary.

Refund and cancellation policies will apply as published by Elara Dance Challenge when entries open.
